The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) was established on 17 March 1970 with the primary objective of creating a well-planned satellite city to reduce population pressure on Mumbai.

CIDCO designed a structured urban planning model based on self-sufficient nodes — each containing residential areas, commercial centres, schools, hospitals and public spaces. This model made Navi Mumbai one of India's most liveable planned cities.
